Google Talk, AIM and ICQ
December 5, 2007 on 10:40 am | In General, Software, Web2.0 |Google announced lately that their messenger built into the GMail web interface supports AIM. No words of ICQ there, but be assured it works fine
As AIM is somewhat related to ICQ (I’ll spare you the details) you can just use your ICQ # and password and it works fine. Meebo won’t like this as half of its functions are now integrated in GMail. Have fun chatting!
Update: How to use the new feature? Use Settings -> Chat “Sign into a different AIM account” or the “Options” combo box in the chat window (see also screenshot, the AIM icon denotes an AIM contact).

hmmm, could you please be more specific about “entering you’re ICQ#”? Where exactly?

hmmm, thanks. but I don’t have the “Chat” DIV on the left side as in the picture above - It’s “Quick Contacts” in my Gmail. There is no “options” link at the bottom of this DIV. Did you do anything special to activate the chat feature?

Might depend on the language version .. Johannes: Are you using the English Gmail interface?
Comment by Mathias Lux — December 5, 2007 #
yes, I switched to it - nothing changed.

Strange enough. I’ve heard about partial roll outs .. might this be possible that I’ve got the feature earlier than you have?

Click on the “enable chat” at the bottom of Gmail - you’ll get the extra part for AIM setup in Settings -> Chat. If you disable chat, it disappears.

Thank you Leonid. There is no such “enable chat” link - maybe it’s like Mathias said - partial roll out.

Switch to English(US), English(UK) doesn’t have it.

Johannes,
it’s either you language (as pointed out already - should be English(US)), or your browser (which should be either MSIE or Firefox).

Thanks a lot Peter and Leonid. After switching to English (US) everything is fine.
