I’m happy to announce that there will be a special session of the Multimedia Metadata Community at the TRIPLE-I / I-Media conference in Graz in September.

CfP: I-Media Special Session on Multimedia Metadata

Studies show that sales of digital capture devices like video camera, digital photo cameras, or mobile phones with digital cameras are still rising. Therefore it can be expected that the number of created digital multimedia content will rise dramatically in future. Multimedia metadata is currently the only way to cope with problems like semantics based retrieval or organization of content and provides means to specify adaptation and delivery constraints and rules. Within this special session the importance of metadata for media technologies is discussed. We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers. Topics include but are not limited to:

Multimedia technologies and metadata in the social web
Multimedia semantics
Annotation of multimedia content
Metadata in pervasive multimedia computing
Metadata for new media
Studies and surveys in context of multimedia metadata and new media

We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers.

Organization

The special session is organized by the Multimedia Metadata Community which has already organized a series of 8 successful workshops in the past taking place in Aachen, Berlin, Graz and Klagenfurt. The Multimedia Metadata Community aims to extend the active and successful community and network with new members.

Submission

Submissions for the special session are handled via the submission system of the TRIPLE-I/I-Media and are reviewed by the TRIPLE-I/I-Media program committee.

14 April 2008: Submission of the full papers (4-8 pages)
31 May 2008: Notification of acceptance
30 June 2008: Camera ready version (8 pages)
3-5 September 2008: TRIPLE-I Conference

Multimedia Book Coming Feb. 2008

Behind the curtains of the Multimedia Metadata Community we prepared a book consisting of 12 contributions in context of multimedia metadata and semantics. It’s already mentioned online. It’s available in Feb. 2008.

The MPEG-21 Multimedia Framework

Christian Timmerer (active contributor to the MPEG standards) has blogged about the MPEG-21 multimedia framework. I like his post as it brings the current state of MPEG-21 to the point. And therefore it is one of the rare information snippets outsiders can access You’ll find also the links to the appropriate parts of the standard as well as links to the publicly available parts.

JUKM Special Issue on Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop Results 2005 Online

The last article shows the results of an user evaluation of Caliph, which yielded quite interesting results. The user questionaire showed that users could imagine usage semantic descriptions in a professional environment, but not for personal use due to the complexity of annotation.

Report on the 5th Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop

From Sept. 6th to Sept. 8th 2006 I’ve been at the 6th I-Know conference in Graz, Austria. There also the 5th Multimedia Community Workshop, where a lot of interesting topics have been discussed. The program can be found here, presentations and papers will be put online.
Within the internal workshop on Friday 8th of Sept. following presentations were given:

Visualisation Ideas for the MISTRAL Meeting Explorer (by Vedran Sabol)
The DANAE project and future perspectives (by Christian Timmerer)
Formalizing semantics of MPEG-7 descriptions (by Werner Bailer)

All presentations will be put online on the community portal along with additional material.

CfP: 5th Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop

The Multimedia Metadata Community aims at bringing together experts from research and industry in the area of multimedia meta data interoperability for collaborative working environments. By establishing a community of professionals it is intended to bridge the gap between an academic research and an industrial scale development of innovative products for natural collaboration, with a strong focus on MPEG-7 & MPEG-21.

In the line of these goals, the 5th Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop takes place during the 6th International Conference on Knowledge Management, the I-Know 06, 6-9th September 2006, Graz Austria, which focuses on applications and experience reports of multimedia metadata standards in industry and research. The Multimedia Meta Data Community has opened its portal to the public. The main focus of the community is on MPEG-7 and MPEG-21.

From the website: The community aims at bringing together experts from research and industry in the area of multimedia meta data interoperability for collaborative working environments. By establishing a community of professionals it is intended to bridge the gap between an academic research and an industrial scale development of innovative products for natural collaboration. To accomplish this goal the portal provides information about MPEG-7 & MPEG-21 related events, participating research groups, as well as industry partners to share expertise on multimedia meta data interoperability.
