I’m happy to announce that there will be a special session of the Multimedia Metadata Community at the TRIPLE-I / I-Media conference in Graz in September.

CfP: I-Media Special Session on Multimedia Metadata

Studies show that sales of digital capture devices like video camera, digital photo cameras, or mobile phones with digital cameras are still rising. Therefore it can be expected that the number of created digital multimedia content will rise dramatically in future. Multimedia metadata is currently the only way to cope with problems like semantics based retrieval or organization of content and provides means to specify adaptation and delivery constraints and rules. Within this special session the importance of metadata for media technologies is discussed. We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers. Topics include but are not limited to:

Multimedia technologies and metadata in the social web

Multimedia semantics

Annotation of multimedia content

Metadata in pervasive multimedia computing

Metadata for new media

Studies and surveys in context of multimedia metadata and new media

We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers.

Organization

The special session is organized by the Multimedia Metadata Community which has already organized a series of 8 successful workshops in the past taking place in Aachen, Berlin, Graz and Klagenfurt. The Multimedia Metadata Community aims to extend the active and successful community and network with new members.

Submission

Submissions for the special session are handled via the submission system of the TRIPLE-I/I-Media and are reviewed by the TRIPLE-I/I-Media program committee.

14 April 2008: Submission of the full papers (4-8 pages)
31 May 2008: Notification of acceptance
30 June 2008: Camera ready version (8 pages)
3-5 September 2008: TRIPLE-I Conference

Special Session Chairs

Michael Granitzer, Know-Center Graz

Mathias Lux, ITEC / Klagenfurt University

Yesterday evening Semantic Web Atelier (SWAt) 11 took place in Graz, Austria. We had one great talk from Martin Höffernig about the architecture and implementation for a semantic validation service for multimedia metadata documents called VAMP. Martin had support from Werner Bailer and Georg Thallinger who also described the broader context of the work in detail.

So what does VAMP do? In short words: This validation service allows to verify the (partial) semantic correctness of an XML (especially MPEG-7) file. Take for example the temporal decomposition of a video file described in XML. You’ve scenes (longer sequences of video frames), which are grouping shots (shorter sequences of video frames). One semantic constraints is that no shot start point (time in the video) can occur before the start point of the parent scene. The same goes for end points: With the parent scene all child shots should end. However in distributed environment one can never be sure. Also automatic extraction routines also fail to detect the exact frame number, where shot boundaries are found. A semantic validation service provides means to detect such semantic errors and that’s what VAMP does.

More information can be found on the VAMP website and I think Martin Höffernig, Werner Bailer and Georg Thallinger are open to questions

[Note this is a cross post from here]

Within the peer reviewed issue the results of the Multimedia Metadata Community workshop series in 2005 are presented:

Analysis of the Data Quality of Audio Descriptions of Environmental Sounds, Dalibor Mitrovic, Matthias Zeppelzauer and Horst Eidenberger from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria

Community Hosting with MPEG-7 Compliant Multimedia Support, Ralf Klamma, Marc Spaniol and Yiwei Cao from the RWTH Aachen, Germany

Semantic Applications on MPEG-7 Descriptions of Multi-modal Meeting Corpora: First Results, Victor Manuel García-Barrios and Christian Gütl from the Graz University of Technology, Austria

On the Complexity of Annotation with the High Level Metadata, Mathias Lux from the Klagenfurt University in Austria and Michael Granitzer and Werner Klieber from the Know-Center Graz, Austria

The last article shows the results of an user evaluation of Caliph, which yielded quite interesting results. The user questionaire showed that users could imagine usage semantic descriptions in a professional environment, but not for personal use due to the complexity of annotation.

By establishing a community of professionals it is intended to bridge the gap between an academic research and an industrial scale development of innovative products for natural collaboration. To accomplish this goal the portal provides information about MPEG-7 & MPEG-21 related events, participating research groups, as well as industry partners to share expertise on multimedia meta data interoperability.
