I’m happy to announce that there will be a special session of the Multimedia Metadata Community at the TRIPLE-I / I-Media conference in Graz in September.

CfP: I-Media Special Session on Multimedia Metadata

Studies show that sales of digital capture devices like video camera, digital photo cameras, or mobile phones with digital cameras are still rising. Therefore it can be expected that the number of created digital multimedia content will rise dramatically in future. Multimedia metadata is currently the only way to cope with problems like semantics based retrieval or organization of content and provides means to specify adaptation and delivery constraints and rules. Within this special session the importance of metadata for media technologies is discussed. We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers. Topics include but are not limited to:

Multimedia technologies and metadata in the social web
Multimedia semantics
Annotation of multimedia content
Metadata in pervasive multimedia computing
Metadata for new media
Studies and surveys in context of multimedia metadata and new media

We encourage the submission of high quality scientific work as well as application papers.

Organization

The special session is organized by the Multimedia Metadata Community which has already organized a series of 8 successful workshops in the past taking place in Aachen, Berlin, Graz and Klagenfurt. The Multimedia Metadata Community aims to extend the active and successful community and network with new members.

Submission

Submissions for the special session are handled via the submission system of the TRIPLE-I/I-Media and are reviewed by the TRIPLE-I/I-Media program committee.

14 April 2008: Submission of the full papers (4-8 pages)
31 May 2008: Notification of acceptance
30 June 2008: Camera ready version (8 pages)
3-5 September 2008: TRIPLE-I Conference

Metadata for the MP4 container

Have you ever wondered why there is no title or description in your AVI files just like you expect it to be there in your MP3 files? Well AVI does not really support these things. However the Moving Pictures Expert Group has defined the MP4 container format for audiovisual information (which is very much like the MOV container) and did not forget about metadata: They defined a way to put it in there. However as it always comes with standards, where a whole lot of people talk and try to find common ground, there is not one simple way (like ID3), but several complicated ways to choose from. Therefore applications like VLC or Winamp do not support MP4 metadata out of the box. Due to the string relation to the MOV format however iTunes supports MP4 metadata.

Thanks to Markus Waltl I got some links for tools reading and manipulating MP4 metadata. They all have in common that they are rather slow:

AtomicParsley – A command line tool for reading and setting metadata in MPEG-4 files. Has also a good explanation of the MP4 atoms here.
Yamb – A GUI tool using MP4box and AtomicParsley.
mp4tag – Part of mpeg4ip, a framework for handling mp4 files.

Having something to do with multimedia one minds that there are a lot of tools around that cost a lot of money. One surprising functional and cheap (well basically its free) tool is Cut! It has a simple and intuitive interface and it basically does its job good without any annoying feedback dialogs or errors. Its part of the TerraTec Home Cinema Program and allows lossless cut of MPEG streams. TerraTec Home Cinema 4.75 can be obtained from the driver section of the TerraTec Homepage.

CfP Content-Based Multimedia Indexing, CBMI-2007

Just received this weekend from an MPEG standardization group context (just to give a hint where to categorize this conference in a first shot

Following the four successful previous events of CBMI (Toulouse 1999, Brescia 2001, Rennes 2003 and Riga 2005), CBMIâ€™2007 will be held on June 25 â€“ 27 2007 in Bordeaux, France. CBMIâ€™07 aims at bringing together the various communities involved in the different aspects of Content-Based Multimedia Indexing. Best papers will be published in a special issue of Signal Processing : Image Communication Journal, Elsevier.

The Workshop has been supported by IEEE(request 2007 pending), EURASIP, European research networks COST292 and Muscle, INRIA, CNRS

JUKM Special Issue on Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop Results 2005 Online

Some days ago above mentioned special issue was put online. As the JUKM is an open access journal, everyone can view and download the published articles. Within the peer reviewed issue the results of the Multimedia Metadata Community workshop series in 2005 are presented:

The last article shows the results of an user evaluation of Caliph, which yielded quite interesting results. The user questionaire showed that users could imagine usage semantic descriptions in a professional environment, but not for personal use due to the complexity of annotation.

Report on the 5th Multimedia Metadata Community Workshop

From Sept. 6th to Sept. 8th 2006 I’ve been at the 6th I-Know conference in Graz, Austria. There also the 5th Multimedia Community Workshop, where a lot of interesting topics have been discussed. The program can be found here, presentations and papers will be put online.
Within the internal workshop on Friday 8th of Sept. following presentations were given:
